Chapter 4: THE WOMAN HE PLANNED TO REPLACE ME WITH
Three days after Lily underwent surgery, Officer Carter came back with new information.
Investigators had discovered messages exchanged between Daniel and a woman named Vanessa Reed.
I knew exactly who Vanessa was.
She was employed in the finance department at Daniel’s company.
She was thirty-two years old, consistently dressed in beautiful clothes, and had attended our family’s Christmas celebration the year before.
During that party, Vanessa had given Lily an expensive dollhouse.
I could still remember thanking her for such a generous gift.
And I remembered Daniel telling me she was nothing more than a particularly thoughtful coworker.
Now Officer Carter informed me that Vanessa and my husband had been having an affair for almost a year.
I stared silently at him.
After everything else I’d discovered, the affair itself was hardly shocking.
What caught me completely off guard was the information he shared next.
Vanessa had recently bought a house in Colorado.
Daniel had been contributing money toward its payments.
And he had discussed moving there with Lily after divorcing me.
Coldness spread through my body.
“He wanted to take Lily to Colorado?”
“That appears to have been one of the possibilities they discussed.”
“But he told his mother she’d care for Lily.”
Officer Carter nodded.
“We’re still determining exactly what each person knew and intended.”
Then he handed me a printed message investigators had recovered.
It had been sent by Vanessa.
You promised me Rachel wouldn’t be a problem after this month.
Daniel had answered:
Everything is arranged. Just trust me.
I stared at the printed words.
Everything is arranged.
While I had continued doing his laundry, preparing his dinners, and helping him pack for his trips, my husband had been organizing an entirely different future for himself.
And apparently, simply telling me he wanted a divorce hadn’t been enough.
Instead, he seemed to have decided that ruining my reputation would make it easier for him to escape our marriage on his own terms.
He needed everyone to believe I was responsible for Lily’s injuries.
He wanted an advantage in a future custody dispute.
He intended to maintain control over our finances.
And he wanted to leave our marriage while presenting himself as the devoted father who had courageously saved his daughter from a negligent mother.
The full meaning of what he’d planned made me feel physically ill.
But the investigation was about to expose another discovery, one that was even more devastating.
Investigators eventually obtained additional video from our dining room security camera.
During her questioning, Patricia had repeatedly tried to convince the officers that her son had made all the important decisions.
She insisted Daniel had manipulated her.
She said she had genuinely believed the silver balls were harmless.
She claimed she had never wanted Lily to suffer.
However, another recording revealed a very different story.
It had been captured several days before Lily was rushed to the hospital.
In the video, Patricia was sitting at our dining table while Daniel walked back and forth nearby.
“I don’t like the idea of dragging Lily into this,” Patricia said.
Daniel stopped pacing.
“You told me Rachel was never good enough for this family.”
“That doesn’t mean I want the child hurt.”
“We need evidence.”
Patricia pressed her fingers against her temples.
“Then find another way.”
Daniel bent forward over the dining table.
“If Rachel gets blamed for neglect, she’ll be too frightened to fight over the money. And if she’s investigated, the court will think twice about giving her custody.”
Patricia turned her head toward the window.
“And Vanessa?”
“She already knows we’re leaving.”
His mother sighed heavily.
“You should have divorced Rachel two years ago.”
Daniel gave a nod.
“I know.”
Then Patricia spoke again.
And this time, I had to stop the recording.
“Promise me you won’t let anything happen to Lily.”
Daniel answered almost without hesitation.
“Nothing serious will happen.”
Patricia continued staring at him.
“Are you certain?”
He merely shrugged.
“Children swallow things all the time.”
I forced myself to resume the footage.
Patricia sat without speaking for several long seconds.
Then she reached for her phone.
“Fine,” she said. “But after this, I want Rachel out of our lives for good.”
I couldn’t stop hearing that final sentence.
Patricia hadn’t been an innocent grandmother who had unwillingly obeyed her son’s instructions.
She had helped create the scheme.
Perhaps she had experienced moments of hesitation.
Perhaps the thought of what might happen to Lily had frightened her.
But when the time came to make a choice, she had agreed to participate.
And the person who had suffered for their choices was my five-year-old daughter.
