PART 15: THE ACE OF SPADES

Nobody touched the card.
The firefighters stared at it.
The deputies stared at it.
Even Jonathan Mercer remained perfectly still.
Finally, he slipped on a fresh pair of evidence gloves.
“Photograph everything.”
Camera flashes lit the smoky clearing.
Jonathan carefully lifted the Ace of Spades from the safe.
On the opposite side, beneath the handwritten message, another line appeared in faint blue ink.
Game Seven.
The detective frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Jonathan’s expression darkened.
“It means we’re too late.”
I looked at him.
“Too late for what?”
He held up the card.
“Richard Holloway leaves one of these every time he closes an operation.”
“You’ve seen this before?”
“Six times.”
A silence settled over everyone.
Jonathan continued.
“Each investigation ended the same way.”
“Evidence destroyed.”
“Witnesses disappeared.”
“Money vanished.”
“No convictions.”
He looked at the words again.
“This says Game Seven.”
I slowly understood.
“This is the seventh operation.”
Jonathan nodded.
“And if history repeats itself…”
“…he believes he’ll win again.”
One of the forensic technicians approached carrying a metal tray.
“Sir.”

“We recovered something beneath the safe.”
Jonathan turned.
The technician carefully unfolded a partially burned map.
Most of it had been destroyed.
Only one corner survived.
Across the top were handwritten coordinates.
Below them…
Several red circles connected by black lines.
“What are they?”
The technician pointed.
“They’re all properties owned by shell companies connected to Ethan.”
Jonathan studied the map.
“No.”
He tapped the final red circle.
“Every location except this one has already been searched.”
The last circle remained untouched.
No address.
Only one handwritten word.
Harbor.
My pulse quickened.
“I’ve heard Ethan say that before.”
Jonathan looked up immediately.
“When?”
“He used to answer late-night phone calls.”
“When he hung up…”
“…he always said the same sentence.”
“What sentence?”
I closed my eyes, remembering his exact words.
“‘Tell Harbor everything is ready.'”
Jonathan’s jaw tightened.
“Harbor isn’t a place.”
“It’s a person.”
At that exact moment, one of the deputies shouted from the edge of the woods.
“Sir!”
“We’ve got fresh tracks!”
Everyone turned.
The deputy pointed toward the muddy ground.
Boot prints.
Several sets.
Leading away from the cabin.
But another trail caught Jonathan’s attention.
Smaller footprints.
Dress shoes.
The heel pattern looked familiar.
He crouched beside them.
Then looked at me.
“These aren’t your father’s.”
“No.”
“They’re too small.”
The forensic technician measured the prints.
“Approximately size nine.”
Jonathan slowly stood.
“I know whose shoes these belong to.”
The detective looked surprised.
“You do?”
Jonathan nodded once.
“I’ve seen this exact sole pattern before.”
“Where?”
Jonathan looked toward the dark forest.
“At Ethan Blackwood’s office.”
Everyone froze.
I frowned.
“But Ethan was already under surveillance.”
Jonathan nodded.
“Exactly.”
He looked down at the footprints one last time.
“Which means…”
“…someone visited this cabin after Ethan was already in custody.”
The realization hit every investigator at once.
Richard Holloway wasn’t cleaning up Ethan’s mistakes.
Someone inside the organization was still free…
…and was staying one step ahead of federal investigators.

PART 16: THE LEAK

No one spoke for several seconds.

Rain continued falling through the trees.

The fresh footprints disappeared into the forest, as if the person who left them had vanished into the darkness itself.

Jonathan Mercer remained perfectly still.

Then he slowly looked at every investigator standing around him.

Every deputy.

Every technician.

Every firefighter.

One by one.

Finally, he spoke.

“We have a leak.”

The words landed like thunder.

One detective frowned.

“Inside our task force?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Someone knew we were coming.”

“They reached this cabin first.”

“They emptied the safe.”

“They burned the evidence.”

“And they escaped before we arrived.”

No one argued.

Because the facts spoke for themselves.

I looked at Jonathan.

“My father’s letter…”

“He warned you not to trust anyone except yourself.”

Jonathan’s expression hardened.

“He wasn’t warning you.”

“He was warning me.”

He turned toward the deputies.

“From this moment forward, no information leaves this scene.”

“No phone calls.”

“No emails.”

“No radio transmissions except emergency traffic.”

“If someone is feeding Holloway information…”

“…that ends today.”

Every officer nodded.

A forensic technician hurried over carrying a clear evidence bag.

“Sir.”

“We recovered this from the ashes beneath the desk.”

Inside the bag was a partially burned flash drive.

One corner had melted.

The metal connector was blackened.

Jonathan carefully examined it.

“It might still be readable.”

The technician nodded.

“Our lab has recovered data from worse.”

For the first time that morning…

I felt a small spark of hope.

Maybe my father had managed to save something after all.

Then another investigator called from the edge of the property.

“Mr. Mercer!”

“We’ve found tire impressions.”

Everyone walked toward the muddy service road.

The impressions were deep.

Wide.

Fresh.

Jonathan crouched beside them.

“Luxury SUV.”

The investigator nodded.

“Probably less than an hour old.”

Another technician held up a measuring tool.

“The rear tire has an unusual wear pattern.”

Jonathan looked at him.

“Can we identify the vehicle?”

“Possibly.”

“If we’re lucky.”

The technician reached into the mud with tweezers.

He lifted a tiny fragment of black plastic.

“What is that?”

“A piece of a taillight.”

Jonathan smiled faintly.

“Good.”

“Holloway finally made a mistake.”

As the evidence was being photographed, a deputy jogged over holding a clipboard.

“Sir.”

“I’ve finished interviewing the neighbors.”

“Did anyone see the fire?”

“One witness did.”

Jonathan stood.

“What did they say?”

The deputy glanced at his notes.

“An elderly fisherman was out on the lake.”

“He saw two black SUVs leave the cabin.”

“Then…”

The deputy hesitated.

“Then he saw another vehicle arrive several minutes later.”

Jonathan frowned.

“Another vehicle?”

The deputy nodded.

“It didn’t stay long.”

“It turned around almost immediately.”

“What kind of vehicle?”

“A dark blue sedan.”

Jonathan’s eyes narrowed.

“Did the witness see the driver?”

“He only noticed one thing.”

“What?”

“He said the driver was a woman.”

A strange silence settled over the group.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“A woman?”

The deputy nodded.

“He couldn’t see her face.”

“But he remembered her hair.”

“Bright red.”

Jonathan’s expression changed instantly.

“You’ve got to be kidding…”

I looked at him.

“You know who that is?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead…

He reached into his wallet.

Pulled out an old photograph.

And handed it to me.

I stared at the picture.

Standing beside Richard Holloway…

Smiling directly at the camera…

Was a woman with striking red hair.

On the back of the photograph, my father had written three words in black ink.

Never trust Evelyn.

PART 17: EVELYN’S SECRET

I stared at the photograph.

The woman couldn’t have been older than forty.

Her bright red hair framed a confident smile.

She stood beside Richard Holloway as though they had known each other for years.

“Who is she?” I asked.

Jonathan Mercer slowly took the photograph back.

“Evelyn Cross.”

“For fifteen years, we believed she was Holloway’s personal assistant.”

He paused.

“We were wrong.”

I frowned.

“What was she?”

Jonathan’s eyes remained fixed on the photograph.

“His partner.”

The words settled over everyone.

An investigator looked surprised.

“You mean she was helping him?”

Jonathan shook his head.

“No.”

“I mean she was running half the organization.”

A chill ran down my spine.

“So she’s just as dangerous.”

Jonathan nodded.

“Possibly more.”

He slipped the photograph into an evidence sleeve.

“Richard builds the plan.”

“Evelyn makes sure it survives.”

The forensic technician approached carrying the damaged flash drive.

“Sir.”

“Our mobile recovery unit is ready.”

Jonathan looked at him.

“Do it.”

The technician connected the burned flash drive to a portable forensic computer inside the command vehicle.

Everyone gathered around the monitor.

The screen remained black.

Then…

A progress bar appeared.

RECOVERING DATA…

Five percent.

Twelve percent.

Twenty-three percent.

The technician smiled.

“We’re getting something.”

My pulse quickened.

“If my father saved files…”

“They may still be here.”

Forty-one percent.

Fifty-eight percent.

Then suddenly…

The monitor flashed.

A single folder appeared.

Its name was simple.

FINAL EVIDENCE

Jonathan whispered,

“William…”

Inside were dozens of encrypted files.

Photographs.

Financial records.

Video clips.

Voice recordings.

One file immediately caught Jonathan’s attention.

It wasn’t encrypted.

It was simply titled:

WATCH THIS FIRST

The technician clicked it.

My father’s face appeared on the screen.

He looked exhausted.

His hair was uncombed.

Dark circles rested beneath his eyes.

But his voice remained calm.

“If you’re watching this…”

“…then I failed to stay ahead of them.”

I felt tears filling my eyes.

“Dad…”

He looked directly into the camera.

“Claire…”

“If you’re alive, don’t blame yourself.”

“You did exactly what I asked.”

Jonathan lowered his head.

My father continued.

“I’ve spent twenty years following Richard Holloway.”

“I thought I understood him.”

“I was wrong.”

“He isn’t protecting money.”

“Money is only the reward.”

“Power is the goal.”

The investigators listened without moving.

Then my father’s expression became more serious.

“There is someone you’ve never met.”

“Someone even Richard answers to.”

The command vehicle fell completely silent.

Jonathan slowly whispered,

“No…”

My father continued.

“We never learned his real name.”

“Everyone inside the organization calls him only one thing.”

He leaned closer to the camera.

“The Chairman.”

Every investigator exchanged uneasy glances.

My father reached toward the camera.

“If you’re seeing this…”

“…The Chairman already knows who you are.”

The video suddenly ended.

No credits.

No explanation.

Only a black screen.

Then…

The technician frowned.

“That’s strange.”

Jonathan looked over.

“What?”

The technician pointed to the monitor.

“The flash drive just received a remote access request.”

Everyone froze.

Jonathan’s expression hardened.

“Someone…”

He looked around the command vehicle.

“…knows we just opened your father’s files.”
