PART 7: THE VOICE ON THE PHONE

Nobody in the room breathed.
Luca slowly pressed the speaker button.
A pleasant woman’s voice filled the suite.
“This is the front desk. How may I help you?”
“My name is Luca Moretti,” my brother repeated. “I’m calling regarding a reservation made three weeks ago under Ethan Collins.”
“I have the file here,” the receptionist replied.
“We’re trying to verify some information.”
“Certainly.”
Luca glanced at me before asking the question.
“Your staff just asked whether I was calling about his wife or his fiancée.”
“That’s correct.”
“Why?”
There was a brief pause as computer keys clicked in the background.
“Because there were two separate incidents involving Mr. Collins.”
Every eye turned toward Ethan.
His breathing became uneven.
The receptionist continued.
“On the first evening, he checked in with a woman he introduced as his fiancée.”
Madison closed her eyes.
“On the second day, another woman arrived unexpectedly asking for Mr. Collins. She identified herself as his wife.”
I frowned.
“Another wife?”
The receptionist sighed.
“It became… somewhat confusing.”
Luca’s voice remained calm.
“What happened?”
“The two women nearly encountered one another in the lobby.”
“The gentleman became extremely distressed.”
“He asked our manager to move one of them to another floor immediately.”
Nobody said a word.
The receptionist continued.
“Our staff believed it was a family misunderstanding.”
Luca thanked her.
“One final question.”
“Of course.”
“Do you happen to have the name of the woman listed as his fiancée?”
More keyboard clicks.
“Yes.”
She read it aloud.
“Olivia Bennett.”
I looked directly at Ethan.
“So Olivia exists.”
He stared at the floor.
Luca asked another question.
“And the woman who identified herself as his wife?”
The answer came almost instantly.
“Her name was Jennifer Collins.”
The room froze.
Madison slowly turned toward Ethan.
“Jennifer?”
I whispered the name to myself.
“Who is Jennifer?”
No answer.
Luca ended the call.
Silence settled over the suite once again.
Finally, I spoke.
“I’ve never heard that name before.”
Madison looked equally stunned.
“I’ve never heard it either.”
The security chief crossed his arms.
“So we now have three women.”
He counted on his fingers.
“Mrs. Clara Collins.”
“Miss Madison.”
“And Jennifer Collins.”
He looked toward Ethan.
“That seems… mathematically difficult.”
For the first time, Ethan looked genuinely terrified.
“This has gone too far.”
I laughed softly.
“No.”

“It hasn’t gone far enough.”
I reached into my backpack.
Luca raised an eyebrow.
“You brought more?”
“I wasn’t sure how much I’d need.”
I removed a thin blue folder.
Unlike the first folder, this one contained only legal documents.
Retainer agreement.
Bank correspondence.
Certified copies.
A notarized affidavit.
Madison looked at me.
“When did you do all this?”
“Yesterday.”
“You hired a lawyer yesterday?”
“I hired one before I boarded the plane.”
I slid the retainer agreement across the table.
“My attorney started working the moment I froze the card.”
Ethan’s eyes landed on the firm’s letterhead.
His face immediately changed.
“No…”
I noticed the reaction.
“You recognize the name.”
He swallowed.
“They represent my company.”
“I know.”
His voice cracked.
“You called them?”
“I didn’t have to.”
“My attorney’s partner represents your employer.”
The room became deathly quiet.
Luca slowly smiled.
“I wondered when you were going to mention that.”
Ethan stumbled backward until he hit the wall.
“You can’t…”
“I can.”
“I already did.”
I opened the final page of the blue folder.
At the top was a single sentence.
NOTICE TO PRESERVE ALL FINANCIAL RECORDS.
Below it were requests for emails.
Expense reports.
Corporate credit-card statements.
Travel reimbursements.
Payroll records.
Company laptops.
Phone backups.
Everything connected to Ethan’s business travel.
Madison looked from the document to Ethan.
“You told me every trip was paid for by your company.”
I nodded.
“And in about forty-eight hours…”
“…we’re all going to find out whether that was another lie.”
Ethan’s knees nearly gave out.
For the first time since this nightmare had begun, he wasn’t afraid of losing me.
He was afraid of what his employer was about to discover.

PART 8: THE AUDITOR

Ethan stared at the notice in my hands as if it were a prison sentence.
His lips moved.
No words came out.
Finally, he whispered, “You wouldn’t do that.”
I looked him in the eye.
“I already did.”
He shook his head.
“My career…”
“You should have thought about your career before using your company’s business trips to hide your affairs.”
He looked at Luca.
“Tell her to stop.”
My brother laughed.
“You still think someone else is going to save you.”
The room phone rang.
The sound made everyone jump.
The head of security answered it.
He listened for a few seconds before nodding.
“Thank you.”
He hung up and looked at Ethan.
“Sir, the accounting department has finished reviewing the disputed transactions.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I don’t want to hear this.”
“I’m afraid you need to.”
The security chief placed another folder on the table.
“Our accounting manager noticed several unusual payment attempts connected to your stay.”
I opened the folder.
Inside were payment logs.
Each failed within minutes of my freezing the debit card.
One attempt.
Then another.
Then another.
Different cards.
Different names.
Madison leaned closer.
“Those aren’t my cards.”
“I know,” I replied.
Luca frowned.
“Neither are they Clara’s.”
The security chief nodded.
“We contacted the issuing banks after the repeated declines.”
He pointed to the names.
“All three cards were reported by their owners as lost or compromised.”
The room fell silent.
I slowly looked at Ethan.
“Explain.”
“I…”
He swallowed hard.
“I borrowed them.”
“From whom?”
“My clients.”
Luca burst out laughing.
“You borrow people’s credit cards?”
“No…”
“I mean…”
“There was an emergency.”
Madison folded her arms.
“Every answer you give somehow makes things worse.”
He looked desperate.
“You don’t understand how much pressure I was under.”
I calmly closed the folder.
“Pressure doesn’t steal.”
“It doesn’t lie.”
“And it certainly doesn’t book luxury suites in Hawaii.”
Just then, Ethan’s phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
Every bit of color disappeared from his face.
I noticed immediately.
“Who is it?”
He locked the screen.
“No one.”
Luca moved faster than I expected.
He stepped beside Ethan and glanced at the illuminated display before it went dark.
He smiled.
“I know that number.”
Ethan’s eyes widened.
“You do?”
Luca nodded.
“The area code belongs to your company’s headquarters.”
Nobody spoke.
The phone rang again.
And again.
Then a voicemail notification appeared.
Another call followed immediately.
I extended my hand.
“Answer it.”
“No.”
“Answer it.”
He backed away.
“I can’t.”
The security chief looked at him.
“Mr. Collins, refusing to answer isn’t going to stop whatever is happening.”
Madison quietly whispered,
“I think you already know what they’re calling about.”
My own phone vibrated.
It was my attorney.
I answered.
“Hello, Ms. Collins.”
“Hello, David.”
His voice was calm.
“I wanted to update you before you heard it from anyone else.”
“I’m listening.”
“We contacted Ethan’s employer this morning to preserve financial records connected to the pending divorce and disputed transactions.”
“And?”
“There was… an unexpected development.”
My heart began to race.
“What happened?”
“The company’s internal auditor reviewed only six months of expense reports.”
He paused.
“They found significant discrepancies almost immediately.”
I slowly sat down.
“What kind of discrepancies?”
“Trips billed to clients who never scheduled meetings.”
“Hotel invoices that don’t match corporate travel records.”
“Entertainment expenses submitted twice.”
“Personal vacations listed as business conferences.”
Across the room, Ethan covered his face with both hands.
David continued.
“The company has suspended access to all of his corporate accounts while they complete a full investigation.”
Madison gasped.
Luca didn’t say a word.
He simply watched Ethan.
I asked the question everyone in the room was thinking.
“Does his company believe this is fraud?”
There was a long silence on the other end.
Then David answered quietly.
“They’re no longer asking whether it happened.”
“They’re trying to determine how much.”
I lowered the phone.
The room was perfectly still.
Ethan looked like a man watching his entire life collapse one brick at a time.
Then his phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID didn’t show the office.
It displayed one name.
MICHAEL RICHARDS — CEO.
Ethan stared at the screen without moving.
Luca looked at me and smiled faintly.
“I have a feeling…”
“…this conversation is about to get much more expensive.”

PART 9: THE CALL HE COULDN’T IGNORE

The phone continued to vibrate in Ethan’s trembling hand.
MICHAEL RICHARDS — CEO.
It stopped.
For three seconds, nobody spoke.
Then it started ringing again.
The same name.
The same number.
The same impossible decision.
Madison looked at him.
“If you don’t answer, he’ll keep calling.”
Ethan’s thumb hovered over the screen.
Finally, he accepted the call.
“H… hello?”
His boss didn’t waste a second.
“Ethan, where are you?”
“I’m…”
He looked toward the window.
“…I’m in New York.”
Luca covered his mouth to hide a smile.
The CEO’s voice became noticeably colder.
“Interesting.”
“Because our accounting department traced your corporate laptop to Honolulu less than an hour ago.”
Ethan’s eyes closed.
“I can explain.”
“You’ve used that sentence too many times.”
The room became perfectly silent.
Even through the speaker, Michael Richards sounded exhausted.
“I have two people sitting in my office.”
“Our internal auditor.”
“And outside counsel.”
“They’ve spent the last four hours reviewing your expense reports.”
Ethan swallowed.
“There has to be some mistake.”
“There is.”
“A very expensive one.”
Michael continued.
“Do you remember submitting reimbursement requests for meetings with Pacific Medical Holdings?”
“Yes.”
“We called them.”
“They’ve never heard of you.”
Another pause.
“What about the Denver conference?”
“It was canceled before you supposedly attended.”
“The Chicago client dinner?”
“The client was in London that week.”
“The Miami strategy session?”
“The hotel confirmed you never reserved the conference room you billed us for.”
Each sentence struck Ethan harder than the last.
Finally, Michael asked,
“Do you know what concerns me the most?”
No answer.
“It isn’t the money.”
“It’s the pattern.”
The CEO took a slow breath.
“You’ve been creating fake business trips for years.”
Madison looked at me in disbelief.
Years.
Michael spoke again.
“I need you to answer one question honestly.”
Ethan whispered,
“Okay.”
“Did you submit personal vacations as company business?”
His lips trembled.
“I…”
“I need the truth.”
For the first time all day…
Ethan stopped lying.
“…Yes.”
Nobody in Room 318 moved.
The confession hung in the air like smoke.
Michael’s voice softened.
“I appreciate the honesty.”
“But it comes too late.”
There was another pause.
“Our attorneys will contact you.”
“Your access to company systems has been permanently revoked.”
“Your corporate credit cards have been canceled.”
“You are suspended without pay effective immediately.”
Ethan looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“And one more thing.”
“The police asked us not to discuss the investigation until they contact you directly.”
Every head turned toward Ethan.
His eyes shot open.
“The police?”
“Our auditors are legally required to report suspected financial fraud above a certain threshold.”
Michael sighed.
“I truly hoped the numbers would prove us wrong.”
“They didn’t.”
The line went dead.
The room remained frozen.
Ethan slowly lowered the phone.
His hand was shaking so badly it slipped from his fingers.
The device hit the hardwood floor with a sharp crack.
Madison whispered,
“They’re calling the police…”
Luca looked toward the security chief.
Neither man appeared surprised.
I quietly gathered every receipt, every statement, every photograph, and returned them to my folder.
Ethan watched me.
His voice was barely audible.
“Clara…”
I didn’t answer.
“I’ve lost my job.”
Still nothing.
“My company…”
Silence.
“My future…”
I finally looked at him.
“No, Ethan.”
“You lost those the moment you decided your wife would never discover where her money was really going.”
His shoulders collapsed.
For the first time in seven years…
I wasn’t looking at my husband.
I was looking at a complete stranger.
Just then, there was a firm knock on the suite door.
Three slow, deliberate knocks.
The security chief checked the hallway through the peephole.
Then he turned toward us.
His expression had completely changed.
“They’re here.”
Luca frowned.
“Who?”
The security chief stepped aside from the door.
“Two detectives from the Honolulu Police Department.”
“They’re asking for Mr. Ethan Collins by name.”……
