PART 11: THE TAPE

Nobody spoke.
The old videotape sat in Ethan’s hands like a loaded weapon.
Twelve years.
It had waited twelve years.
Aria stared at it.
Her heart pounded so hard she could hear it.
“If anything happens to me… show this to my daughter.”
Her father’s words.
Her father’s handwriting.
Her father’s voice waiting somewhere inside that tape.
The federal agent cleared his throat.
“We can have it digitized immediately.”
Ethan nodded.
“Now.”
Nobody wanted to wait.
Not after everything they had uncovered.
Within forty minutes they were inside a secure media lab.
Technicians carefully cleaned the tape.
Years of dust.
Years of silence.
Years of secrets.
Aria sat beside Ethan.
Sophia stood nearby.
The investigators filled the room.
Nobody wanted to miss what came next.
Finally the technician looked up.
“It’s ready.”
The lights dimmed.
The screen flickered.
Static filled the room.
For a terrifying moment nothing happened.
Then an image appeared.
Aria stopped breathing.
Her father.
Older than she remembered.
Thinner.
More tired.

But unmistakably her father.
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
On the screen, he adjusted the camera.
Then sat down.
For several seconds he simply stared forward.
As if gathering courage.
Finally he spoke.
“My name is Daniel Montgomery.”
His voice echoed through the room.
“If you’re watching this, then I am probably dead.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody blinked.
Daniel continued.
“And if I am dead, there is a very strong chance I was murdered.”
The room froze.
Even the investigators looked stunned.
Aria felt her chest tighten.
Murdered.
Not an accident.
Not a suspicion.
Murdered.
Her father continued.
“I have spent months collecting evidence.”
He held up a folder.
“Evidence proving that my wife, Victoria Montgomery, has been working with someone to steal control of my company.”
Sophia exchanged a look with Ethan.
The tape continued.
“I don’t know how much time I have left.”
Daniel looked exhausted.
Frightened.
Like a man being hunted.
“But I know one thing.”
His eyes hardened.
“Victoria isn’t acting alone.”
The room became silent again.
Everyone had suspected it.
Now they had confirmation.
Daniel leaned forward.
“If I disappear, do not believe the official story.”
Aria’s hands shook.
Because she remembered the official story.
Car accident.
Weather conditions.
Tragic loss.
Case closed.
Now her father was telling her it had all been a lie.
Then Daniel reached off camera.
He picked up a photograph.
The room leaned closer.
Aria’s pulse hammered.
The photograph showed Victoria.
And beside her—
The faceless man.
Except this time his face wasn’t cut out.
The room collectively stopped breathing.
Daniel held the picture directly toward the camera.
“His name is—”
Static exploded across the screen.
The image vanished.
Everyone jumped.
The technician rushed forward.
“What happened?”
The screen flickered.
Then returned.
But the photograph was gone.
The moment had been lost.
Aria nearly screamed.
“No!”
The technician worked frantically.
“I’m trying.”
The tape continued playing.
But the critical second had vanished forever.
Daniel’s voice returned.
“If you’re seeing this, then someone probably tried to destroy part of this recording.”
The room froze again.
Daniel gave a sad smile.
“As you can see, I expected that.”
He reached into a drawer.
Then removed a small metallic object.
A flash drive.
Everyone stared.
Daniel placed it on the table.
“The complete files are stored elsewhere.”
Sophia immediately leaned forward.
“Elsewhere where?”
The tape continued.
“Aria…”
Daniel’s voice softened.
For the first time he sounded like a father instead of a businessman.
“If you’re watching this, then you’ve survived something terrible.”
Tears rolled down Aria’s cheeks.
Daniel smiled sadly.
“You were always stronger than you realized.”
The room disappeared around her.
For a moment she was twelve years old again.
Listening to her father tell bedtime stories.
Feeling safe.
Feeling loved.
Daniel took a deep breath.
“The flash drive contains everything.”
His expression darkened.
“Names.”
“Bank records.”
“Bribes.”
“Photographs.”
“Confessions.”
The investigators exchanged excited looks.
This was it.
The evidence.
The answers.
Then Daniel delivered one final revelation.
A revelation so shocking that Ethan slowly sat forward.
Because even he hadn’t expected it.
“The man helping Victoria…”
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“…isn’t her partner.”
Silence.
Heavy silence.
Daniel’s eyes filled with anger.
“He is her brother.”
The room exploded.
“What?”
Sophia whispered.
Aria stared at the screen.
Victoria had a brother?
Nobody had ever mentioned a brother.
Not once.
Not in twenty-four years.
Daniel continued.
“He changed his name years ago.”
“He buried his past.”
“He erased every connection.”
The room became completely still.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“And if anything happens to me…”
He pointed directly at the camera.
Directly at Aria.
“Stay away from him.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Aria’s voice barely worked.
“Who is he?”
On the screen Daniel reached toward the camera.
As though he were about to reveal everything.
The room leaned forward.
Every person waiting.
Every person listening.
Every person desperate for the answer.
Then Daniel spoke the name.
A single name.
The name that made Ethan Cross rise to his feet instantly.
The name that drained every color from Sophia’s face.
The name that changed the entire investigation.
And the name was—
The tape suddenly stopped.
Black screen.
Silence.
Absolute silence.
The technician looked horrified.
“What happened?”
He checked the equipment.
Then slowly turned toward them.
His face pale.
Very pale.
“The rest of the recording is missing.”

PART 12: THE NAME THEY HEARD

The room erupted.
“What do you mean it’s missing?”
Sophia was already on her feet.
The technician looked terrified.
“The tape ends here.”
“No.”
One of the investigators grabbed the monitor.
“No, that’s impossible.”
The technician rewound the footage.
Fast-forwarded.
Checked every frame.
Every second.
Every damaged section.
The result never changed.
The recording stopped at the exact moment Daniel Montgomery revealed the name.
As if someone had surgically removed only those few seconds.
The most important seconds.
Aria stared at the black screen.
Her father’s final warning.
Gone.
The answer.
Gone.
The truth.
Gone.
Then she noticed something strange.
Everyone else looked frustrated.
Confused.
Angry.
But Ethan looked different.
His expression wasn’t confusion.
It was recognition.
A terrible recognition.
As though he had heard something.
Something nobody else had.
Aria slowly turned toward him.
“Ethan.”
He didn’t answer.
“Ethan.”
His eyes remained fixed on the blank screen.
The room slowly grew quiet.
Because everyone noticed.
Everyone saw it.
Finally Sophia spoke.
“You heard it.”
Not a question.
A statement.
Ethan remained silent.
Sophia’s face paled.
“You heard the name.”
Aria felt her heartbeat quicken.
“What name?”
Nobody answered.
She stepped closer.
“What name?”
Ethan finally looked at her.
For the first time since she met him, genuine conflict appeared in his eyes.
Then he looked away.
And that terrified her more than anything.
Because powerful men only look away when the truth hurts.
“What name?”
Her voice cracked.
Ethan took a slow breath.
Then another.
Finally he spoke.
“I can’t be certain.”
The answer made nobody happy.
Sophia folded her arms.
“Ethan.”
His jaw tightened.
“I heard part of it.”
The room became completely silent.
Aria barely breathed.
“And?”
Ethan looked toward the window.
Rain continued falling outside.
The city lights shimmered through the glass.
Then he answered.
“It sounded like…”
His voice lowered.
“…Alexander.”
The room froze.
One investigator immediately searched the name.
Thousands of results appeared.
Too many.
Useless.
Sophia shook her head.
“Alexander who?”
Ethan’s expression darkened.
“I don’t know.”
Nobody spoke.
Then one of the federal investigators suddenly stood.
His face had gone white.
“What?”
Sophia asked.
The man swallowed.
Hard.
“I know an Alexander.”
Everyone turned toward him.
The investigator opened a classified database.
Typed a few commands.
Pulled up an old photograph.
The image appeared on the main screen.
A man in his late fifties.
Silver hair.
Expensive suit.
Cold eyes.
The moment Aria saw him, something inside her twisted.
She didn’t know why.
She had never met him.
Yet somehow he felt familiar.
Dangerously familiar.
The investigator pointed.
“Alexander Kane.”
The room became silent.
Very silent.
Sophia frowned.
“Who is he?”
The investigator looked uncomfortable.
The kind of uncomfortable people become when speaking about powerful enemies.
“He used to be one of the most influential financiers in the country.”
“Used to?”
The investigator nodded.
“He disappeared eleven years ago.”
Aria felt cold.
Eleven years.
The same year.
The same timeline.
The same period when her father died.
Sophia immediately noticed it too.
“Ethan.”
He already knew.
She could see it.
Everyone could.
The investigator continued.
“No public appearances.”
“No interviews.”
“No financial records.”
“Nothing.”
The room listened carefully.
Then he delivered the sentence nobody expected.
“But rumors never stopped.”
“What rumors?”
The investigator looked directly at Ethan.
Then answered.
“That Alexander Kane didn’t disappear.”
Silence.
Heavy silence.
The investigator continued.
“He simply started operating through other people.”
Aria felt her pulse accelerate.
Other people.
Like Victoria.
Like Richard Vance.
Like hidden partners.
Then Sophia’s phone rang.
She answered immediately.
Listened.
And froze.
“What happened?”
Sophia lowered the phone slowly.
Her face had lost all color.
“Ethan…”
The room instantly became alert.
“What?”
Sophia swallowed.
“The search team just finished examining Victoria’s office.”
Nobody moved.
“What did they find?”
Sophia looked directly at Aria.
Then at Ethan.
Then back at the screen showing Alexander Kane.
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
“A photograph.”
The room remained silent.
“What photograph?”
Sophia turned her tablet around.
The image appeared.
Victoria.
Standing beside a man.
Both smiling.
Both holding champagne glasses.
Unlike the other photographs, this one wasn’t damaged.
Nothing had been cut out.
Nothing had been hidden.
The man’s face was perfectly visible.
Aria stopped breathing.
The investigator stopped breathing.
Sophia stopped breathing.
Because the man in the photograph was the same man displayed on the government database.
Alexander Kane.
The room erupted into motion.
Investigators grabbed phones.
Attorneys started shouting instructions.
Federal agents began issuing warrants.
Years of mystery had just become a real target.
A real suspect.
A real person.
Then Ethan noticed something nobody else saw.
A date.
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
Printed in the corner of the photograph.
His eyes narrowed.
Immediately.
Dangerously.
Sophia saw it too.
“What?”
Ethan slowly zoomed in.
The room gathered around.
The date became clearer.
And the moment Aria read it, her stomach dropped.
Because the photograph wasn’t eleven years old.
It wasn’t ten years old.
It wasn’t even five years old.
The photograph had been taken six weeks ago.

PART 13: THE MAN WHO WASN’T SUPPOSED TO EXIST

For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Six weeks ago.
The date glowed from the corner of the photograph like a warning.
Alexander Kane wasn’t a ghost.
He wasn’t retired.
He wasn’t dead.
He wasn’t hiding in some distant country.
He was still meeting with Victoria.
Recently.
Actively.
Deliberately.
The room exploded into motion.
“Enhance the image.”
“Track the location.”
“Run facial recognition again.”
“Pull every travel record.”
Phones rang.
Investigators shouted.
Attorneys typed furiously.
Within moments, the photograph became the center of the entire investigation.
Aria sat motionless.
Because one thought refused to leave her mind.
If Alexander Kane was alive…
Then her father’s warning wasn’t history.
It was current.
Someone dangerous was still out there.
And he knew Victoria.
Ethan watched the room carefully.
Then pointed toward the screen.
“Background.”
Everyone stopped.
The photograph zoomed in.
Not on Victoria.
Not on Alexander.
The background.
A luxury hotel entrance.
A gold emblem mounted beside revolving doors.
One investigator frowned.
“I know that logo.”
The image enlarged further.
The room became silent.
Then the investigator cursed.
“What?”
Sophia asked.
The investigator looked stunned.
“That’s impossible.”
“What is?”
The man pointed at the emblem.
“The hotel belongs to Cross International.”
Every eye turned toward Ethan.
Even Ethan looked surprised.
“What?”
The investigator zoomed in again.
“No mistake.”
“The Cross Crown Hotel.”
Aria felt cold.
Very cold.
The hotel belonged to Ethan.
Yet somehow one of the most wanted men in the investigation had been meeting Victoria there.
Six weeks ago.
Without anyone noticing.
Without anyone reporting it.
Ethan immediately looked toward Sophia.
“Guest records.”
She was already moving.
Minutes later hundreds of files filled the screen.
Reservations.
Payments.
Security logs.
VIP arrivals.
Everything.
The search continued.
Then suddenly Sophia froze.
“Ethan.”
The room instantly quieted.
“What?”
She slowly turned her laptop.
A reservation record appeared.
Private suite.
Three nights.
Paid in cash.
Guest name: Michael Reed.
One investigator shook his head.
“Fake identity.”
Everyone knew it.
Sophia clicked deeper.
Security footage appeared.
A man entering the hotel lobby.
Baseball cap.
Sunglasses.
Gray coat.
Trying not to be noticed.
Unfortunately for him, the camera quality was excellent.
The facial recognition software activated.
Processing.
Matching.
Searching.
Then—
MATCH FOUND.
Alexander Kane.
The room went silent.
Nobody could deny it now.
He had been there.
Six weeks ago.
Then another file appeared.
Meeting logs.
Visitor access.
Private dining reservations.
Sophia’s eyes widened.
“Oh my God.”
“What?”
She turned the screen around.
The reservation wasn’t for two guests.
It was for three.
The room froze.
Victoria.
Alexander.
And someone else.
A third person.
Unknown.
Aria stared.
“Who?”
Sophia opened the final security image.
The third guest stood with his back to the camera.
Tall.
Broad shoulders.
Dark suit.
Face hidden.
The image quality wasn’t good enough for identification.
But something about him felt familiar.
Uncomfortably familiar.
Ethan stared at the screen.
Then slowly stood.
The movement immediately drew attention.
“What?”
Sophia asked.
Ethan didn’t answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the image.
Then he walked closer.
Much closer.
Until his face was only inches from the screen.
Aria felt her heartbeat accelerate.
Because Ethan looked disturbed.
Truly disturbed.
Finally he spoke.
“I know him.”
The room froze.
“What?”
Sophia whispered.
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“I know that suit.”
Nobody understood.
Ethan pointed at the man’s sleeve.
Barely visible.
Almost hidden.
A small silver insignia.
The symbol looked meaningless to everyone else.
But not to Ethan.
Not to Sophia.
Their faces changed instantly.
And that terrified Aria.
Because powerful people only fear things they recognize.
“What is it?”
Aria asked.
Sophia slowly sat down.
As though her legs suddenly felt weak.
Her voice barely existed.
“That’s not a company symbol.”
The room remained silent.
“What is it?”
Sophia looked at Ethan.
Then answered.
“It’s a family crest.”
A chill swept through the room.
Family crest.
Aria looked at Ethan.
His expression had gone cold.
Colder than she had ever seen.
“Whose family?”
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan answered.
Quietly.
Dangerously.
The answer hit the room like an explosion.
“My family.”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Aria felt the blood drain from her face.
No.
No.
No.
The words screamed inside her head.
Not Ethan’s family.
Not after everything.
Not after her father trusted him.
Not after everything they had uncovered.
Sophia immediately shook her head.
“Maybe it’s coincidence.”
But even she didn’t sound convinced.
Ethan continued staring at the screen.
Then another alert appeared.
One of the investigators looked up sharply.
“Ethan.”
“What?”
The investigator swallowed.
“We just identified the suite’s payment source.”
The room turned.
Sophia frowned.
“Cash payment.”
“So we thought.”
The investigator slowly turned the monitor around.
A bank transfer appeared.
Hidden.
Layered.
Buried beneath multiple shell companies.
But now visible.
Now exposed.
Now undeniable.
Aria looked at the sender’s name.
Then looked again.
Because she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.
Neither could anyone else.
The transfer originated from a trust account.
An old trust account.
A trust account created by her father.
The room became completely silent.
Because somehow…
Someone had been using Daniel Montgomery’s money for years after his death.
