PART 9: THE SECOND TRUST

Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The room felt frozen in time.
Aria stared at the screen.
Billions.
The number looked unreal.
Like a typo.
Like somebody had accidentally added extra zeros.
She blinked.
The number remained.
Her stomach twisted.
For twenty-four years she had worried about rent.
Food.
Medical bills.
Tuition.
Survival.
Now a document claimed she possessed wealth beyond imagination.
It didn’t feel exciting.
It felt terrifying.
Sophia slowly lowered the tablet.
“The trust was hidden through multiple international holding companies.”
One investigator shook his head.
“Incredible.”
Another looked stunned.
“We missed it completely.”
Ethan remained silent.
His eyes never left the document.
Aria looked at him.
“What is it?”
For the first time since she met him, Ethan seemed genuinely disturbed.
Not frightened.
Disturbed.
As though the existence of this trust explained something he wished wasn’t true.
“What?”
He finally spoke.
“This isn’t an inheritance.”
The room went silent again.
Sophia frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Ethan pointed at the creation date.
“Three weeks before her father’s death.”
Everyone looked.
Then back at Ethan.
He continued.

“People don’t move this amount of money unless they’re preparing for something.”
A chill passed through the room.
Preparing.
The word felt wrong.
Dangerous.
Aria swallowed.
“Preparing for what?”
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Sophia continued reviewing files.
Page after page.
Account structures.
Trust agreements.
Corporate registrations.
Then suddenly she froze.
Her eyes widened.
“Ethan.”
He looked up.
“What?”
Sophia slowly zoomed in on a paragraph.
A single paragraph buried deep inside hundreds of pages.
The room gathered around the screen.
Aria read the words.
Then read them again.
Because they made absolutely no sense.
In the event of my death under suspicious circumstances, all trust assets shall remain inaccessible until a formal investigation is reopened.
Aria stared.
Suspicious circumstances.
Her father hadn’t died in an accident?
She looked at Ethan.
Slowly.
Carefully.
“What does that mean?”
Nobody answered immediately.
Sophia finally spoke.
“It means your father believed someone might kill him.”
The words landed like a bomb.
Aria felt dizzy.
“No.”
Her voice barely existed.
“No.”
But memories were already returning.
Memories she had buried years ago.
The arguments.
The shouting.
The threats.
The night before her father’s death.
She remembered hearing him and Victoria screaming behind a closed door.
She remembered breaking glass.
She remembered her father saying something.
Something she hadn’t understood at twelve years old.
If anything happens to me, she never gets control.
Aria suddenly grabbed the edge of the table.
Her knees felt weak.
Because for the first time in twelve years…
That sentence made sense.
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone jumped.
Sophia answered.
Listened.
Then immediately placed the call on speaker.
“Report.”
A male voice filled the room.
Urgent.
Breathless.
“Montgomery Holdings is collapsing.”
The investigators exchanged looks.
The man continued.
“Three board members resigned.”
“Two banks suspended negotiations.”
“Federal investigators arrived at headquarters forty minutes ago.”
Aria blinked.
“What?”
The voice continued.
“It gets worse.”
Nobody liked the sound of that.
“Richard Vance turned over everything.”
Sophia closed her eyes.
Victoria was finished.
Everyone knew it.
Then the man delivered another update.
“The authorities executed a search warrant at Victoria’s private residence.”
The room became silent.
Ethan folded his arms.
“What did they find?”
The answer came immediately.
“A hidden safe.”
Nobody reacted at first.
Then Sophia’s face changed.
“What was inside?”
The man hesitated.
A terrible sign.
When investigators hesitate, it usually means the answer is bad.
Very bad.
Finally he spoke.
“Documents.”
“What kind?”
Another pause.
Longer this time.
Then—
“Original estate records.”
The room exploded with activity.
Investigators stood.
Attorneys grabbed phones.
Sophia nearly dropped her tablet.
Original records.
The missing records.
The records everyone thought were destroyed.
Aria’s heart pounded.
“That’s good, right?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone was waiting for the rest.
Then the investigator spoke again.
His voice quieter now.
More serious.
“There was something else.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“What?”
The answer changed everything.
“A second file.”
The room went still.
“The file was labeled with your father’s name.”
Aria stopped breathing.
“What was inside?”
The investigator took a deep breath.
When he spoke, his voice sounded different.
Almost shocked.
“There were photographs.”
Aria felt cold.
Very cold.
“What photographs?”
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Then the investigator answered.
And with those words, the entire mystery took a terrifying new direction.
“Photographs of meetings.”
The room remained silent.
“Between Victoria…”
Another pause.
“…and the man officially blamed for your father’s death.”
Aria’s world tilted.
Because her father’s death had been ruled an accident.
There was no man blamed.
There had never been a suspect.
Yet someone had hidden photographs proving otherwise.
Ethan’s expression hardened.
The investigators looked stunned.
Sophia slowly sat down.
Aria’s voice barely worked.
“Who was he?”
The investigator swallowed.
Then answered.
“We don’t know.”
Silence.
Heavy silence.
Then he added four words that sent a chill through every person in the room.
“The man’s face was cut out.”

PART 10: THE FACE THAT WAS MISSING

The room remained silent.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
The man’s face was cut out.
Every photograph.
Every single one.
Aria stared at the speakerphone.
“What do you mean cut out?”
The investigator answered immediately.
“Literally cut out.”
A photograph appeared on the main screen.
Then another.
Then another.
The same result every time.
Victoria stood clearly visible.
Her father stood clearly visible.
Backgrounds.
Locations.
Dates.
Everything remained intact.
Except one thing.
The unknown man’s face.
Removed with surgical precision.
Not torn.
Not damaged.
Removed.
As though someone desperately wanted the photographs to survive…
But not the identity.
Sophia zoomed in.
“The cuts were made years ago.”
Ethan folded his arms.
“Not recently?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“The paper has aged.”
Aria felt her stomach tighten.
That meant somebody had hidden those photographs for years.
Waiting.
Protecting them.
Or protecting themselves.
The investigator continued.
“There were twelve photographs in total.”
Another image appeared.
This one showed Victoria entering a restaurant.
The date stamped in the corner was only three days before Aria’s father’s death.
The next image appeared.
Victoria and the faceless man exiting a hotel.
Two days before the death.
Another.
One day before.
Aria felt cold.
The pattern was impossible to ignore.
Victoria met with the man repeatedly.
Then her father died.
Then Victoria inherited control.
Then the evidence disappeared.
Then the attorney vanished.
Then the guardianship records changed.
Then twelve years passed.
Nobody spoke the obvious conclusion.
Nobody needed to.
A second investigator entered the room carrying a folder.
His expression looked grim.
“Ethan.”
“What?”
“We identified the locations.”
The folder opened.
Restaurant.
Hotel.
Private airport.
Conference center.
All confirmed.
All real.
All connected.
Aria stared at the pages.
“Who was he?”
The investigator shook his head.
“We still don’t know.”
Frustration exploded through the room.
Sophia rubbed her forehead.
“There has to be something.”
The investigator nodded.
“There is.”
Everyone looked up.
“The photographs weren’t the only thing inside the safe.”
The room instantly quieted.
“What else?”
The investigator placed a small evidence bag on the table.
Inside was a silver key.
Old.
Worn.
Ordinary.
At first glance it seemed worthless.
But the evidence label attached to the bag changed everything.
Recovered from Victoria Montgomery’s private safe.
Aria frowned.
“A key?”
The investigator nodded.
“We almost missed it.”
Sophia looked closer.
“There are numbers engraved on it.”
The key rotated under the light.
Locker 318.
Union Trust Depository.
Chicago.
Ethan immediately looked toward Sophia.
“Find it.”
Her fingers flew across the keyboard.
Within seconds records appeared.
Then Sophia froze.
Her eyes widened.
“Ethan…”
“What?”
“It’s real.”
The room leaned closer.
Sophia swallowed.
“Union Trust Depository closed eleven years ago.”
Aria blinked.
“Then why does the key matter?”
Sophia looked up slowly.
Because the facility wasn’t abandoned.
It was sealed.
Every safety deposit box remained untouched.
For eleven years.
The room became silent.
Very silent.
A safe-deposit box.
Hidden photographs.
A dead father.
A forged inheritance.
A missing attorney.
The pieces were beginning to connect.
Then Ethan stood.
“Get the car.”
Nobody argued.
Thirty minutes later they arrived at the abandoned building.
Rain continued falling across Chicago.
The old depository stood between modern skyscrapers like a forgotten relic.
Police officers already waited outside.
Federal investigators.
Attorneys.
Security.
Everyone knew the discovery could be important.
Or explosive.
Inside, dust covered everything.
Old counters.
Locked offices.
Broken clocks.
Time seemed frozen.
A federal agent approached.
“The warrant is approved.”
Ethan nodded.
The group followed the agent downstairs.
Deeper.
Lower.
Past reinforced doors.
Past steel gates.
Until they reached a massive vault.
Rows upon rows of deposit boxes covered the walls.
Thousands of them.
The agent stopped.
“Box 318.”
Aria’s pulse hammered.
The silver key shook in her hand.
Sophia gently touched her arm.
“You don’t have to do this.”
Aria looked at the box.
At the key.
At the years of lies.
Then she inserted the key.
Click.
The lock opened immediately.
No resistance.
No hesitation.
As though it had been waiting.
The drawer slid out.
Everyone crowded closer.
Inside sat only three items.
A thick envelope.
A small black notebook.
And a videotape.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Aria reached for the envelope first.
Her fingers trembled.
Slowly she opened it.
A letter.
Her father’s handwriting.
Again.
Tears instantly filled her eyes.
But before she could read it, Ethan picked up the videotape.
His expression changed.
“What?”
Aria asked.
Ethan turned the tape over.
The handwritten label was still attached.
The ink had faded with age.
But the words remained readable.
Sophia leaned closer.
Then went pale.
Very pale.
“What does it say?”
Ethan looked directly at Aria.
For the first time all night, uncertainty appeared in his eyes.
Not fear.
Not hesitation.
Something worse.
Because whatever was recorded on that tape had been hidden for twelve years.
Waiting.
Locked away.
Protected.
His voice was quiet when he finally answered.
“It says…”
The entire room held its breath.
Then Ethan read the label aloud.
“If anything happens to me…”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
“…show this to my daughter.”

PART 11: THE TAPE

Nobody spoke.
The old videotape sat in Ethan’s hands like a loaded weapon.
Twelve years.
It had waited twelve years.
Aria stared at it.
Her heart pounded so hard she could hear it.
“If anything happens to me… show this to my daughter.”
Her father’s words.
Her father’s handwriting.
Her father’s voice waiting somewhere inside that tape.
The federal agent cleared his throat.
“We can have it digitized immediately.”
Ethan nodded.
“Now.”
Nobody wanted to wait.
Not after everything they had uncovered.
Within forty minutes they were inside a secure media lab.
Technicians carefully cleaned the tape.
Years of dust.
Years of silence.
Years of secrets.
Aria sat beside Ethan.
Sophia stood nearby.
The investigators filled the room.
Nobody wanted to miss what came next.
Finally the technician looked up.
“It’s ready.”
The lights dimmed.
The screen flickered.
Static filled the room.
For a terrifying moment nothing happened.
Then an image appeared.
Aria stopped breathing.
Her father.
Older than she remembered.
Thinner.
More tired.
But unmistakably her father.
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
On the screen, he adjusted the camera.
Then sat down.
For several seconds he simply stared forward.
As if gathering courage.
Finally he spoke.
“My name is Daniel Montgomery.”
His voice echoed through the room.
“If you’re watching this, then I am probably dead.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody blinked.
Daniel continued.
“And if I am dead, there is a very strong chance I was murdered.”
The room froze.
Even the investigators looked stunned.
Aria felt her chest tighten.
Murdered.
Not an accident.
Not a suspicion.
Murdered.
Her father continued.
“I have spent months collecting evidence.”
He held up a folder.
“Evidence proving that my wife, Victoria Montgomery, has been working with someone to steal control of my company.”
Sophia exchanged a look with Ethan.
The tape continued.
“I don’t know how much time I have left.”
Daniel looked exhausted.
Frightened.
Like a man being hunted.
“But I know one thing.”
His eyes hardened.
“Victoria isn’t acting alone.”
The room became silent again.
Everyone had suspected it.
Now they had confirmation.
Daniel leaned forward.
“If I disappear, do not believe the official story.”
Aria’s hands shook.
Because she remembered the official story.
Car accident.
Weather conditions.
Tragic loss.
Case closed.
Now her father was telling her it had all been a lie.
Then Daniel reached off camera.
He picked up a photograph.
The room leaned closer.
Aria’s pulse hammered.
The photograph showed Victoria.
And beside her—
The faceless man.
Except this time his face wasn’t cut out.
The room collectively stopped breathing.
Daniel held the picture directly toward the camera.
“His name is—”
Static exploded across the screen.
The image vanished.
Everyone jumped.
The technician rushed forward.
“What happened?”
The screen flickered.
Then returned.
But the photograph was gone.
The moment had been lost.
Aria nearly screamed.
“No!”
The technician worked frantically.
“I’m trying.”
The tape continued playing.
But the critical second had vanished forever.
Daniel’s voice returned.
“If you’re seeing this, then someone probably tried to destroy part of this recording.”
The room froze again.
Daniel gave a sad smile.
“As you can see, I expected that.”
He reached into a drawer.
Then removed a small metallic object.
A flash drive.
Everyone stared.
Daniel placed it on the table.
“The complete files are stored elsewhere.”
Sophia immediately leaned forward.
“Elsewhere where?”
The tape continued.
“Aria…”
Daniel’s voice softened.
For the first time he sounded like a father instead of a businessman.
“If you’re watching this, then you’ve survived something terrible.”
Tears rolled down Aria’s cheeks.
Daniel smiled sadly.
“You were always stronger than you realized.”
The room disappeared around her.
For a moment she was twelve years old again.
Listening to her father tell bedtime stories.
Feeling safe.
Feeling loved.
Daniel took a deep breath.
“The flash drive contains everything.”
His expression darkened.
“Names.”
“Bank records.”
“Bribes.”
“Photographs.”
“Confessions.”
The investigators exchanged excited looks.
This was it.
The evidence.
The answers.
Then Daniel delivered one final revelation.
A revelation so shocking that Ethan slowly sat forward.
Because even he hadn’t expected it.
“The man helping Victoria…”
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“…isn’t her partner.”
Silence.
Heavy silence.
Daniel’s eyes filled with anger.
“He is her brother.”
The room exploded.
“What?”
Sophia whispered.
Aria stared at the screen.
Victoria had a brother?
Nobody had ever mentioned a brother.
Not once.
Not in twenty-four years.
Daniel continued.
“He changed his name years ago.”
“He buried his past.”
“He erased every connection.”
The room became completely still.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“And if anything happens to me…”
He pointed directly at the camera.
Directly at Aria.
“Stay away from him.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Aria’s voice barely worked.
“Who is he?”
On the screen Daniel reached toward the camera.
As though he were about to reveal everything.
The room leaned forward.
Every person waiting.
Every person listening.
Every person desperate for the answer.
Then Daniel spoke the name.
A single name.
The name that made Ethan Cross rise to his feet instantly.
The name that drained every color from Sophia’s face.
The name that changed the entire investigation.
And the name was—
The tape suddenly stopped.
Black screen.
Silence.
Absolute silence.
The technician looked horrified.
“What happened?”
He checked the equipment.
Then slowly turned toward them.
His face pale.
Very pale.
“The rest of the recording is missing.”
