PART 6 : THE HIDDEN ROOM

No one spoke.
Every investigator in the room noticed where Ethan had looked.
His office.
Not the bedroom.
Not the garage.
Not the basement.
His office.
Jonathan Mercer gave a slow nod.
“Thank you.”
Ethan frowned.
“For what?”
“You just answered our biggest question.”
“I didn’t answer anything.”
Jonathan smiled.
“You didn’t have to.”
The deputy sheriff turned toward the investigators standing in the hallway.
“Search the office first.”
Ethan lunged forward.
“No!”
The deputy caught him before he had taken two steps.
“I’m ordering you to remain here.”
“Get your hands off me!”
His voice echoed through the house.
Margaret stood so quickly that her chair tipped onto the floor.
“Ethan!”
“What are you doing?”
He ignored her.
His eyes remained fixed on the hallway.
For the first time since Jonathan had arrived…
Ethan looked genuinely terrified.
Not angry.
Not offended.
Terrified.

I had seen that look only once before.
Six months earlier.
The evening he rushed home unexpectedly after I had been dusting his office.
He had grabbed the cleaning supplies from my hands.
“You never come in here again.”
At the time, I thought he was protecting confidential business files.
Now…
I understood.
One investigator disappeared into the office.
Another followed carrying a camera.
The third wore blue evidence gloves.
The house became painfully quiet.
Minutes passed.
No one moved.
Then…
A loud metallic sound echoed from down the hallway.
Clang.
Another.
Clang.
Jonathan didn’t even turn around.
“What did you find?”
A voice answered from inside the office.
“Bookshelf.”
“Hidden locking mechanism.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Jonathan looked at him.
“So there is a hidden room.”
“I want my attorney.”
“You are welcome to call one.”
Another investigator appeared in the doorway.
“We’ve opened it.”
Jonathan finally walked toward the office.
The deputy remained beside Ethan.
I stayed where I was.
Margaret looked at me with trembling eyes.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“You never told me.”
I looked at the bruise forming beneath my lip.
“You never asked.”
She lowered her head.
Tears slowly filled her eyes.
“I thought…”
“He always said you were dramatic.”
I answered quietly.
“Abusive men usually write the story before anyone else gets to speak.”
A long silence followed.
Then Jonathan called from the hallway.
“Mrs. Blackwood.”
I walked toward the office.
The hidden door stood open behind a wall of built-in bookshelves.
Inside was a narrow room without windows.
Shelves covered every wall.
Boxes.
Files.
Laptops.
External hard drives.
Locked cash cases.
Everything carefully labeled.
One investigator photographed every inch.
Another inventoried the shelves.
Jonathan picked up the first banker box.
Across the side someone had written one word in black marker.
CLIENTS.
He opened it.
Inside were hundreds of folders.
Each carried a different family name.
Retirement accounts.
Investment contracts.
Personal financial records.
Jonathan slowly removed another folder.
This one contained photographs.
Not business photographs.
Pictures of people.
Older couples.
Young families.
Military veterans.
Widows.
Every photograph had handwritten notes attached.
Estimated assets.
Property value.
Inheritance expected.
Risk level.
My stomach tightened.
“What is this?”
Jonathan answered quietly.
“A target list.”
The room fell completely silent.
Then an investigator opened the bottom drawer of a metal filing cabinet.
He looked up.
“Sir…”
“You need to see this.”
Jonathan walked over.
Inside the drawer lay dozens of passports.
Every one carried Ethan Blackwood’s photograph.
None of them carried his real name.

PART 7: THE NAMES HE NEVER TOLD ME

For several long seconds…

No one said a word.

Jonathan Mercer carefully picked up the first passport.

He opened it slowly.

A different name.

A different birthplace.

A different signature.

But the same face.

Ethan’s face.

He opened a second passport.

Another identity.

Another country.

Another history that never existed.

Then a third.

And a fourth.

The investigators exchanged uneasy glances.

“This is much bigger than financial fraud,” one of them murmured.

Jonathan nodded.

“I was afraid of that.”

Margaret stared at the passports as though they might suddenly disappear.

“No…”

She whispered.

“My son has never even owned a passport.”

Jonathan looked at her gently.

“He owns at least twenty-seven.”

The room fell silent again.

I watched Ethan.

He wasn’t looking at the investigators.

He wasn’t looking at his mother.

He was staring at the open drawer.

His expression wasn’t one of shock.

It was calculation.

He was thinking.

Planning.

Looking for a way out.

Jonathan noticed.

“So…”

he said quietly.

“Which name were you planning to use next?”

Ethan finally laughed.

It wasn’t the confident laugh I had heard so many times before.

It sounded strained.

Almost desperate.

“You can’t prove those belong to me.”

Jonathan held up one passport.

“We already have.”

He turned it over.

On the back was a small evidence sticker.

“Your fingerprints.”

He picked up another.

“The same fingerprints.”

Another.

“The same again.”

Ethan’s shoulders sagged.

For the first time since I had met him…

He looked defeated.

An investigator carrying blue gloves stepped into the room.

“Sir.”

“We found something else.”

“What is it?”

The investigator handed Jonathan a thin black notebook.

It looked ordinary.

Worn leather.

Bent corners.

Nothing remarkable.

Until Jonathan opened it.

Every page contained handwritten names.

Beside each name were numbers.

Dates.

Addresses.

Amounts of money.

Some names had a single red checkmark.

Others had a thick black X.

“What is this?” I asked.

Jonathan’s expression darkened.

“I don’t know yet.”

He turned another page.

Then another.

Suddenly…

He stopped.

He looked at me.

“Mrs. Blackwood…”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What?”

He slowly turned the notebook around.

Near the middle of one page…

Written in Ethan’s own handwriting…

Was my full name.

Claire Blackwood.

Beside it were three words.

Insurance paid in full.

And directly underneath…

One sentence.

After July 18.

The room became deathly quiet.

Jonathan looked toward the deputy sheriff.

“I want Mr. Blackwood handcuffed.”

Ethan immediately stepped backward.

“This has gone far enough.”

The deputy reached for his handcuffs.

“You are being detained pending further investigation.”

Ethan’s eyes suddenly darted toward the open office window.

Before anyone could react…

He turned…

And ran.

PART 8: THE CHASE

Ethan reached the office window in three long strides.

He shoved one of the investigators aside.

The man stumbled into a bookshelf as glass exploded across the floor.

Without looking back, Ethan climbed through the broken window and jumped.

“He’s running!” someone shouted.

The deputy sheriff was already moving.

“Stop! Sheriff’s Office!”

Ethan hit the ground hard, rolled across the wet grass, and scrambled to his feet.

Rain poured from the gray morning sky.

His expensive dress shoes slipped in the mud, but fear pushed him forward.

He sprinted toward the tree line behind the property.

Two deputies raced after him.

Jonathan Mercer calmly pulled a phone from his pocket.

“Perimeter teams, suspect is fleeing through the east side of the property.”

His voice never rose.

“Do not lose visual contact.”

Within seconds, distant sirens echoed through the countryside.

Margaret collapsed into a dining chair.

Her hands shook so badly she could barely breathe.

“My God…”

“My son…”

She looked at me with tears running down her cheeks.

“I didn’t know.”

I answered honestly.

“I believe you.”

She covered her face.

“I should have.”

Outside, the sound of shouting grew louder.

Ethan reached the old wooden fence surrounding the back pasture.

He climbed over it in a panic.

Halfway across…

His polished shoe caught on the top rail.

The wood cracked.

He crashed face-first into the soaked ground.

One deputy nearly reached him.

But Ethan kicked backward, striking the deputy’s knee before forcing himself up again.

Blood streamed from a cut above his eyebrow.

He kept running.

Jonathan listened to the radio clipped to the deputy’s shoulder.

“Suspect is heading toward County Road Twelve.”

Another voice answered.

“Units are in position.”

Jonathan looked out the shattered window.

“He has nowhere to go.”

Meanwhile, investigators continued searching the hidden room.

One agent called out.

“Sir, we’ve opened another safe.”

Jonathan walked back inside.

“What did you find?”

The investigator slowly lifted out several thick stacks of cash.

Vacuum-sealed.

Perfectly organized.

Another investigator removed velvet jewelry cases.

Diamond necklaces.

Gold watches.

Rare coins.

Then came passports.

More passports.

Another investigator opened a fireproof document case.

His expression immediately changed.

“Jonathan…”

“You need to see this.”

Jonathan took the folder.

The first page contained photographs.

Not of money.

Not of businesses.

Families.

Children.

Elderly couples.

Every photograph had handwritten notes.

Dates they invested.

How much they lost.

Whether they had complained.

Whether they could afford lawyers.

Jonathan’s jaw tightened.

“He wasn’t just stealing.”

“He was choosing victims.”

I felt a chill run through my entire body.

All those evenings Ethan claimed he was working late…

He had been studying people’s lives.

Looking for the easiest families to destroy.

Just then, the deputy’s radio crackled loudly.

“We have the suspect.”

Everyone stopped.

Another voice followed.

“He attempted to steal a vehicle at the highway intersection.”

“He was intercepted.”

“He is now in custody.”

A long silence filled the house.

Margaret closed her eyes.

One tear rolled down her cheek.

Jonathan slowly closed the evidence folder.

“This investigation…”

“…is only beginning.”

Then another investigator stepped into the room holding a sealed envelope.

“Sir…”

“We found this hidden beneath the cash.”

Jonathan accepted it.

Across the front, written in Ethan’s unmistakable handwriting, were six chilling words.

OPEN ONLY IF I DISAPPEAR….
