PART 6 — UNCLE ROBERT’S SECRET

Tyler stared at the phone as it kept ringing in his hand.
UNCLE ROBERT.
Again.
Again.
Again.
No one spoke.
Even Heller stopped smiling.
The officer nearest us looked at Tyler.
“Don’t answer it.”
Tyler’s thumb hovered over the screen.
“He already knows.”
I looked at him.
“Knows what?”
“That we found the locker.”
Heller laughed under his breath.
The officer shoved him toward the wall.
“Quiet.”
But Heller looked at me.
“If Robert is calling now, you’re already behind.”
My chest tightened.
Tyler’s phone stopped ringing.
Three seconds later, a text arrived.

TYLER, DO NOT TRUST YOUR MOTHER. ASK HER WHAT MICHAEL TOLD HER ABOUT ME.
Tyler slowly raised his eyes to mine.
“Mom?”
“I don’t know what he means.”
Heller chuckled again.
“You sure?”
I turned on him.
“I said I don’t know.”
“Maybe Michael never got the chance to tell you.”
That hit me harder than I wanted it to.
Because Michael had tried to tell me something the week before he died.
I remembered it suddenly.
We had been standing in our bedroom.
He had shut the door.
Locked it.
Then he said,
“If anything ever happens to me, don’t assume the people closest to us are safe.”
I thought he was stressed.
I thought work was getting to him.
I told him he needed sleep.
And then Tyler started crying in the hallway.
The conversation ended.
We never finished it.
Tyler watched my face.
“You remembered something.”
I nodded.
“Your father tried to warn me.”
“About Robert?”
“I don’t know.”
“That means maybe.”
The pain in his voice cut through me.
“No. It means I wish I had listened.”
An officer took Tyler’s phone and photographed the message.
Then another call came in.
Uncle Robert.
This time the officer said,
“Answer it. Speakerphone.”
Tyler looked at me.
I nodded once.
He answered.
“Hello?”
Robert’s voice came instantly.
“Tyler, where are you?”
Nobody responded.
“Tyler?”
“I’m here.”
Robert exhaled.
“Thank God. Listen to me carefully. You need to leave wherever you are.”
Tyler’s jaw tightened.
“Why?”
“Because your mother is in danger.”
I felt every eye turn toward me.
Tyler asked,
“From who?”
A pause.
Then Robert said,
“From the same people who killed your father.”
Heller’s smile vanished.
The officer noticed.
So did I.
Tyler looked at Heller.
Then back at the phone.
“Did you know about them?”
Robert went quiet.
Too quiet.
“Uncle Robert?”
“Yes.”
Tyler closed his eyes.
“How long?”
“Tyler, this is not a conversation for the phone.”
“How long?”
“Since before your father died.”
Tyler’s voice cracked.
“And you never told us?”
“I was trying to protect you.”
I almost laughed.
It came out angry instead.
“You sat at my table for fourteen years.”
Robert stopped breathing for a second.
Then,
“Diane.”
Hearing my name made my stomach turn.
“You knew Michael was in danger.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Heller?”
A longer pause.
“Yes.”
Tyler looked at me.
Heller stared at the floor.
I stepped closer to the phone.
“Did you help him?”
“No.”
“Did you help Michael?”
Silence.
That answer was worse.
“Robert.”
“I tried.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means I was already too deep.”
Tyler whispered,
“In what?”
Robert’s voice dropped.
“The foundation.”
Noah suddenly looked up.
“What foundation?”
Robert heard him.
There was a sharp inhale.
“Who is that?”
Noah stepped closer.
“Evan Cole.”
Nothing.
Then Robert whispered,
“No.”
Noah’s expression hardened.
“Yes.”
“I thought you were dead.”
“You were supposed to.”
Robert started breathing faster.
“Tyler, hang up. Now.”
“No.”
“Listen to me.”
“No.”
“Your father made mistakes.”
Tyler’s eyes flashed.
“My father was murdered.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew why.”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing.”
“I was trying to keep you alive!”
Tyler shouted,
“By letting me grow up with the man who killed him coming to our house?”
Robert shouted back,
“I didn’t know Heller would keep showing up!”
The corridor went silent.
Everyone heard it.
Tyler stared at the phone.
“You knew Heller was coming to us after Dad died?”
Robert realized too late what he had admitted.
“Tyler—”
“How?”
No answer.
I felt my hands go cold.
“How did you know, Robert?”
His voice became small.
“Because Heller called me first.”
My heart stopped.
“He called you?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The night Michael died.”
Tyler whispered,
“Why?”
Robert said nothing.
Heller finally looked up.
He smiled again.
That smile told me we were close to something terrible.
I grabbed the phone.
“Why did Heller call you?”
Robert’s breathing turned uneven.
“Because he needed to know if Michael had given me anything.”
“What?”
“Evidence.”
“Did Michael give you evidence?”
“No.”
“Then what did he give you?”
Robert didn’t answer.
I shouted,
“What did my husband give you?”
Finally, Robert whispered,
“A name.”
Noah stepped closer.
“What name?”
Robert hesitated.
Then he said,
“Samuel Vale.”
Heller’s entire body stiffened.
The officers noticed immediately.
One of them stepped toward him.
“Who is Samuel Vale?”
Heller said nothing.
Robert heard the question.
“You have Heller there.”
“Yes,” Tyler said.
Robert cursed.
Then he spoke quickly.
“Tyler, you need to understand something. Heller was never in charge.”
Noah looked at him.
“Vale was?”
“Yes.”
“Who is he?”
Robert paused.
Then,
“He built the whole network.”
My throat tightened.
“What network?”
“The charities. The shelters. The identity exchanges. All of it.”
Tyler asked,
“Is he still alive?”
Robert whispered,
“Yes.”
Heller suddenly lunged forward.
The officer grabbed him.
“Sit down!”
But Heller was no longer calm.
“Hang up the phone.”
Nobody listened.
Robert continued.
“Michael found Vale’s financial records.”
“Where?” I asked.
“In a private archive.”
“Did Michael copy them?”
“Yes.”
My eyes went to the black case.
“The files in this locker?”
“No.”
That answer made everyone freeze.
Noah frowned.
“Then what’s in the case?”
Robert said,
“Enough to expose Heller.”
Heller shouted,
“Shut your mouth!”
The officer forced him back.
Robert continued anyway.
“But not enough to expose Vale.”
Tyler stared at the case.
“So Dad hid something else.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Robert went quiet.
I knew before he said it.
He was afraid.
Not of Heller.
Of someone bigger.
“Robert.”
“I can’t tell you over the phone.”
“You’ve hidden this for fourteen years.”
“I had no choice.”
“You had fourteen years of choices.”
His voice broke.
“You think I don’t know that?”
For the first time, Robert sounded genuinely afraid.
“I failed your husband.”
I said nothing.
“I failed you.”
Still nothing.
“And I’ve spent fourteen years trying to make sure Tyler didn’t pay for it.”
Tyler’s face hardened.
“Then stop hiding.”
Robert was silent.
Then he said,
“Go home.”
I almost laughed.
“Absolutely not.”
“Diane, listen to me.”
“No.”
“You need something from your house.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“Michael’s blue jacket.”
Tyler and I looked at each other.
The same jacket Michael had been wearing the morning he died.
The jacket Tyler had inherited.
Tyler whispered,
“It’s in my closet.”
Robert said,
“Check the inside seam beneath the left pocket.”
My stomach dropped.
“What’s there?”
“A second key.”
Noah looked at the officers.
“To what?”
Robert replied,
“A safe-deposit box.”
Tyler’s breathing changed.
“Where?”
“First National Bank.”
“And what’s inside?”
Robert’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“The files Michael copied from Samuel Vale.”
Heller exploded.
“No!”
He threw his shoulder into the officer beside him.
Another officer grabbed him.
For the first time, Heller looked terrified.
Not angry.
Terrified.
I stared at him.
That told me everything.
The real evidence existed.
And Heller knew exactly how dangerous it was.
Tyler looked at the phone.
“Why didn’t you tell us before?”
Robert whispered,
“Because Vale thinks that key was destroyed with Michael.”
“And if he finds out it wasn’t?”
Robert said nothing.
Then I heard a sound on his end.
A door.
Slowly opening.
Robert stopped breathing.
I heard him whisper,
“Oh God.”
“Robert?”
No answer.
“Robert!”
A man’s voice came through the phone.
Calm.
Older.
Almost gentle.
“Hello, Diane.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who is this?”
The man chuckled softly.
“You already heard my name.”
Behind me, Heller went completely pale.
Noah whispered,
“Vale.”
The man on the phone said,
“That’s right.”
Then Robert shouted somewhere in the background,
“DON’T TELL HIM WHERE THE KEY IS!”
A loud crash followed.
The line filled with static.
Tyler screamed,
“Uncle Robert!”
Then Samuel Vale spoke one final time.
“Bring me Michael’s key, Diane.”
I gripped the phone.
“And if I don’t?”
There was a pause.
Then Robert screamed.
Vale’s voice stayed perfectly calm.
“Then your brother dies before sunrise.”…..
